Project in Focus
Eggs, an excellent source of protein, used to be very difficult to find in the small villages of South Kordofan. FAR recently helped to establish ten poultry units consisting of a small shed that houses 150 layer chickens. The units are run by women’s groups that FAR trained in poultry keeping and management. Each unit produces over a hundred eggs a day that are then sold by the women. After subtracting the cost of guards, chicken feed, and marketing, the women divide the profit between the Village Development Committee, the women’s group, and each participant. Each woman earns between forty and fifty Sudanese pounds ($20-25) a month. Having a source of eggs in the community greatly improves the nutritional intake of the local population and ensures that children are receiving protein in their diet.
In order to improve the poultry projects FAR is partnering with the Ministry of Animal Resources in el-Obeid, North Kordofan. Together they are conducting a study that looks at breeding local Betwell Chickens with White Chickens. This is a valuable way for FAR to work with the Sudanese government and to improve poultry keeping practices.
