FAR Facts
How many staff work for FAR? FAR believes in focusing its capacity at the field level. The majority of its approximately 200 workers is Sudanese, supported by 8 expatriates and a small Canadian office.
What is FAR’s budget? FAR’s annual budget varies year-to-year but is approximately US$6 -$8 million per year.
Where are FAR’s field offices? FAR’s national office is in Khartoum. FAR has nine regional offices located in West Darfur, South Kordofan, Upper Nile, and White Nile.
How long has FAR worked in Sudan? FAR was established in 1984 and is one of the oldest development organizations in Sudan. FAR is known throughout Sudan as an organization that builds long-term partnerships with communities based on trust, relationships, and capacity building. To learn more see FAR’s Story.
Does FAR work in any other countries? FAR has concentrated its work in Sudan and does not currently operate in any other countries FAR believes that cooperation and networking with other organizations is vital to working effectively. FAR partners with local community-based organizations (CBOs) in order to raise their capacity and work towards sustainability of the local organization and their community based work.

FAR collaborates and cooperates with many international NGOs in order to increase effectiveness in the communities where it works and the impact of its advocacy within and outside the country.
Where does FAR get its resources? FAR is funded by many sources including governments, United Nations agencies, foundations, church-based organizations and individuals.
How is FAR different from other organizations? FAR is committed to ensuring that as many resources as possible are used to change communities at the field level in Sudan. This means that we don’t have a large presence outside Sudan.
An overwhelming majority of FAR’s staff are Sudanese, which we believe is important for sustainability and local ownership. FAR brings in outside experts as required, to help build the capacity of local staff and our partner organizations in the community.
FAR partners with communities in areas where there are few other organizations.

How can I become involved in FAR’s work? There are many opportunities for individuals to support FAR’s work, including financial support, volunteering, praying, and advocating for development in Sudan. To learn more please visit the Get Involved page.

How is FAR governed? FAR is governed by a voluntary Board of Directors and has policies and procedures in place to ensure compliance to both Sudanese and Canadian laws for non-governmental charitable organizations.
FAR has multiple levels of accountability both vertically and horizontally. Vertically, FAR is accountable to the communities in Sudan where we work, the Sudanese Government, the Board of Directors, donors, and the Canadian Government. Horizontally, FAR is accountable to its staff, volunteers and partners who work to ensure we meet community needs efficiently and effectively.
